I don't think I ever heard of this dude before, but whoa - this is deep!

John Ausonius, The Laser Man.

And, on an unrelated (mostly) note, I am still sickened by what happened to Martin Lee Anderson, the 14 year old boy from Florida, who died after being beaten at a boot camp. The camp had the AUDACITY to say it was from sickle cell trait, and the coroner confirmed this, but after seeing a videotape of guards beating the boy the day before he died, the parents request an exhumation. Now, a famous expert observes the second autopsy and says that no, he died from injuries sustained by a beating from guards. The first coroner cannot be reached. The camp officials (the camp is now closed) cannot be reached.

And NO ONE HAS BEEN ARRESTED YET. The beating is on VIDEO, and no one has even been CHARGED with any crimes!

Do young black boys from low income families have any value at all in society?

And what was this kid in boot camp for? For violating his probation for trespassing on school property. Why was he even on probation? Because he and some cousins stole their grandmother's car from a church parking lot. Oh yes, an irredeemable criminal. Two hours after he arrived at the boot camp, he was sent to hospital. The next day he was dead.

There was an interesting article in yesterday's Democrat-Gazette about a study commissioned by the University of Arkansas at Little Rock about race relations in the city. In short, they concluded that while blacks and whites are less socially segregated than in the past, that white people trust blacks waaa-ay more than blacks trust whites...and only 20% of the black people polled trust the police. I hope no one is actually surprised by this, because white folks haven't historically given black folks much reason to trust them, have they? Your story of the beating above is only one more example. As a good liberal, I find it shameful and embarassing, especially in this supposedly enlightened day and age. But connected white men seems to be the ones in charge, and it also seems every time The Man says "Trust Me!" something like this or the Katrina refugee debacle happens.

yeah, it's pretty crappy. I was talking to my coworker about something similar the other day. It was related to slavery and how they are countless stories of slaves being told by their masters, "oh, we'll free you when we die," or "we'll never sell you apart from your family," and the slaves believed them and never tried to run away - thinking, "these people are kinder than a lot of masters." But then, the master gets sick, or needs money, or drops dead, or his/her kids talk them out of it, and - whew! being a slave comes down to just being a slave, and until they had their freedom, they couldn't trust an owner to do right by them. Because the master is looking out for #1 - not the slave. That was the rule, though there were exceptions.

I'm sure you're right.

That rule still exists today. There are plenty of people who treat their employees/underlings like dirt because they're looking out for #1. Look at Ken Lay and Enron, and all those people who lost their entire retirement savings because he was a lying opportunistic scumbag money-loving dick.

Relatedly, did you see the article on CNN.com about the man in New York who is going around to schools teaching about how NYC used slave labor? It said the kids found it eye-opening because they thought slavery only existed in the South. If it brings it closer to home for them, maybe they'll be more aware of how they treat other people.

other than the people who go on Maury didn't know any one really sent their kdis to bootcamp Because he and some cousins stole their grandmother's car from a church parking lot. Then 3/4 of Black America should be on probation cuz lord knows we all have our getting in trouble @ church/mosque/temple stories

That is a sad story where was the boy from ?
