Am in Colombia

Am in Colombia ... just logging in to make sure my account isn't deleted due to inactivity (like Yahoo likes to do). My blog address these days is lareinacobre.com.

Guess I'm back on LJ

My lareinacobre.net site was totally erased by Dreamhost because I couldn't pay the $200 to renew it. I didn't realize they would erase the whole thing, so I didn't take a backup. My bad.

I've been itching to blog, but didn't have anywhere to do it, really. So maybe this is a roundabout way of getting back into LJ.

Girl Next Door? What IS This?

Okay, can someone PLEASE explain The Girls Next Door (the tv show) to me? I know I've seen it once before last year at like, 2 in the morning. But ... do these girls SLEEP with Hugh Hefner? Cuz they seem like his ... children. What? I am so confused here.

Turning the Other Cheek

I am so impressed by the Amish of Nickel Mine. We need more models of forgiveness and non reactionary behavior.

I will think about that next time I try to hold a grudge or feel slighted.

You Are a Shining Star!

Why do I get chills whenever I hear Lionel Richie singing, Say You Say Me? Part nostalgia. Part melody, perhaps? But today I actually listened to the lyrics; I never realized how lovely they were. Songs about loneliness vs. togetherness are the best.

"Say You, Say Me"

[Chorus:]
Say you, say me
Say it for always, that's the way it should be
Say you, say me
Say it together, naturally

I had a dream I had an awesome dream
People in the park playing games in the dark
And what they played was a masquerade
And from behind of walls of doubt a voice was crying out

[Chorus]

As we go down life's lonesome highway
Seems the hardest thing to do is to find a friend or two
A helping hand - some one who understands
That when you feel you've lost your way
You've got some one there to say I'll show you

[Chorus]

So you think you know the answers - oh no
well, the whole world has got you dancing
That's right - I'm telling you
It's time to start believing - oh yes
Believing who you are - you are a shining star

[Chorus]

Brazilian Twin Violinists

On the way to work this morning I heard a story on NPR about Brazilian twin violinists, Walter and Wagner Caldas. So inspiring. Their journey has been amazing!

Bible Literally

According to this survey done by ABC News in the last few years, 30% of US Americans believe the Bible is the literal word of God.

This is almost 1 out of every three people!!!!!!!

Shopping

I said I didn't want to buy any shoe. C & C (the women I mention in my previous post) asked me to join them for shopping at the newly-opened DSW shoe store. DSW sells all kinds of designer and fashionable shoes at slightly lower prices. I did NOT feel like going shoe shopping; I was very tired from a busy week at work. I just wanted to sleep in. Plus, I don't like shopping when I'm feeling overweight.

Well, I went with them anyway, and ended up buying three pairs of shoes, and enjoyed myself.

I bought my very first pair of hot pink shoes - ever (item A). I also bought some Via Spiga espadrilles; they are same style as item B but instead of being gold, the top is a deep brown bronze (almost copper). I had them on for mere seconds when other shoppers in the store started complimenting them on me. And the third pair are a tan version of item C. The pink ones are so comfy that I've been wearing them around the house the last 2 hours.

So far I'm not feeling any remorse.

Found!

I was so happy to learn that this family was found ... I had been really worried that they were dead, driven off the side of a cliff. I mean, how does an entire family go missing for TWO WEEKS? It just wasn't looking good. Thank goodness they were in an RV and could stay warm.

Black Folks

People sometimes forget that white folks aren't the only ones who can be eccentric.

Case in point: Erykah "My eyes are green cuz I eat a lot of vegetables" Badu.

I love wacky black folk! Even though they are ... wacky.

Where are the other wacky poc?

I think it's great that I always get my Latina magazine several days before I'm scheduled to go out of town. Airplane reading!

Serial Killer Strangeness + Martin Lee Anderson

I don't think I ever heard of this dude before, but whoa - this is deep!

John Ausonius, The Laser Man.

And, on an unrelated (mostly) note, I am still sickened by what happened to Martin Lee Anderson, the 14 year old boy from Florida, who died after being beaten at a boot camp. The camp had the AUDACITY to say it was from sickle cell trait, and the coroner confirmed this, but after seeing a videotape of guards beating the boy the day before he died, the parents request an exhumation. Now, a famous expert observes the second autopsy and says that no, he died from injuries sustained by a beating from guards. The first coroner cannot be reached. The camp officials (the camp is now closed) cannot be reached.

And NO ONE HAS BEEN ARRESTED YET. The beating is on VIDEO, and no one has even been CHARGED with any crimes!

Do young black boys from low income families have any value at all in society?

And what was this kid in boot camp for? For violating his probation for trespassing on school property. Why was he even on probation? Because he and some cousins stole their grandmother's car from a church parking lot. Oh yes, an irredeemable criminal. Two hours after he arrived at the boot camp, he was sent to hospital. The next day he was dead.

the past

Tonight on the bus ride home I almost started crying because I wanted so badly to talk to my ancestors.

Only now does that strike me as strange.

Film Favorites

Originally published at Never Say Never to Your Traveling Self. You can comment here or there.

Watching the Academy Awards last night helped me to remember how much time I used to spend watching films. Now I see about two movies a month; back when I had a very limited social life, I would watch, on average, seven a week.

A random 10 of some favorite films:

1) Before Night Falls - art and persecution in Castro’s Cuba

2) Fearless - dying to ourselves - more than once

3) The Decalogue - inspired by the 10 commandments

4) 25th Hour - coming to grips with one’s choices

5) Ed Wood - all the freaky people make the beauty of the world (franti)

6) The Secret Garden (1993) - if you were born sour, you should learn to love flowers

7) All About Eve - great one liners + female characters

8) The Widow of St. Pierre - powerful woman + anti death penalty

9) I Am Cuba - some of the best cinematography ever + an ode to a revolution

10) Karakter - complex relationship between a bewildered son and stonehearted father

My favorite actors are Sarah Polley (My Life Without Me), Daniel Auteuil (Girl on the Bridge), Juliette Binoche (see #8), Jeff Bridges (The Door in the Floor), Jeffrey Wright (Ride with the Devil), Tony Leung Chiu Wai (Ashes of Time), Rachel Weisz (Sunshine), Andre Braugher (Homicide), and a couple of other people. Honorable mention to Linus Roache, who broke my heart twice - first in Priest, then in Wings of the Dove - but never quite found a role as good as those again.

I am always looking for recommends. I am a sucker for redemption stories.

Oscars

For the moment, I am utterly convinced that all of my problems in life would be resolved if only I looked and sounded like Salma Hayek.

omg.

For All My Friends

One of my favorite "advices."

Desiderata
by
Max Ehrmann

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
