1. If the Tao that can be spoken of is not the true Tao, why are so many books written about it?
Seems like the books about the Tao form some sort of shape in one's mind, and that space within the shape is the Tao, or some vision of it. We work with being, the text says, but non-being is what we use. I suppose in a perfect world we might all be still and simply know - but in this world, we need words that will hint at what is inherently inexpressible.
2. What's the most over-rated movie of the last 10 years?
The Matrix. I'm still bewildered about all the fuss. Even the serious take it seriously. I have read many of the arguments and am unconvinced. My first thought was Pulp Fiction, but it's been seven or eight years since I viewed it; I might hold an entirely different opinion of it now as I'm a very different person now.
3. What's seafood got that poultry ain't got?
Better coloring, more flavor.
Isn't usually served in buckets.
Mercury.
4. Everywhere I've lived, the UU have a fabulous film program. Is there something peculiar to UU that makes it more receptive to film as a creator both of discussion and community than other/self-styled-"contemporary" denominations?
Really? Where have you lived? When you say UU are you referring to Unitarian Universalism? If so ...
I'm really going out on a limb here, but I imagine a lot of the UUs who've initiated these film programs grew up during the earlier years of television; the power of film and video impressed itself upon them. My generation rather takes it for granted that film/video can be used as a tool that can influence the way we view the world. It was really our parents' generation that saw dramatic changes occur in our society, in large part due to citizens' responses to images seen onscreen. Essentially, I think that UUs, many of them being social activists, recognize the power that film has to move us to action.
5. Did R. W. Emerson write anything better than "Circles"? If so, what makes it better?
I am partial to "Self-Reliance." It spoke to me; it still speaks to me. It's about accepting yourself as you are while at the same time allowing yourself the liberty to change. "Circles" is more general; it's about everyone, the universe, the way things are, but "Self-Reliance" says, look at yourself. Have faith:
-"But do your work, and I shall know you. Do your work and you shall re-inforce yourself."
