Dec. 2nd, 2003

I had five phone conversations with Comcast representatives in the span of an hour; I won't go into them all, but I thought the following exchange (from Call #1 which I initiated to establish service) was humorous.

Service Rep: Basic installation is $50 and you have to download software from a CD-ROM to set up the service yourself. Professional installation is $100 and we do everything for you. Which would you like?
Me: Hmm. Basic. My parents work with that stuff; they can help me if I hit a snag.
Service Rep: Okay, basic installation it is. That'll be $50 for the install and $55.95 a month for your service.
Me: Does that $55.95 include the $3 modem rental?
Service Rep: Yes; yes, it does.
Me: Okay. Oh, by the way - is Comcast offering any specials?
Service Rep: Oh yes, we are. Free professional installation.
Me: I'd like that, please.
Service Rep: All righty, free professional installation it is.

WTF?!

Then my mom called me to say she had just gotten home and checked her mail; there was a mailing from Comcast offering "free professional installation and free modem rental for a full year." So I called again to get the free modem.

Moral of these stories: Always ask about specials and When in doubt, call again.

My professional opinion is that the first Service Rep was friendly, but clueless (maybe just new). No hard feelings. But this is it, Comcast. You'd better get your act together as far as I'm concerned!
