Embarrassment
Feb. 8th, 2006 05:56 pmI think I embarrassed the minister at my congregation. This past Sunday I was standing at one of the aisle doors, doing my ushering duty, when the Senior and Associate Ministers approached me (they were preparing to enter for the service). I greeted them, and they nodded or replied in response. As they lingered there for a few moments, I noticed that the Associate smiled a little at me in a natural way. The Senior, glanced at my nametag and seemed to want to say something but didn't. She seemed to hover a bit, before suddenly asking:
Minister: So ... you are new to ushering?
CQ: Ohh, no, actually it's my 2nd or 3rd year.
Minister: Your 2nd or 3rd year ushering?
CQ: Yes, my 2nd or 3rd year.
Embarrassing silence. They depart.
Well, my minister doesn't even know who I am, even though I was in her house about four years ago for a "meet the minister" gathering. And not to mention that for the past "2 or 3 years" I've stood in front of her once a month with the service offering while she made her "thank you for your money" prayer. I guess she didn't see me.
I really do feel okay about her not knowing me, but I feel badly that I was cause for her to be embarrassed. Now she'll really never talk to me.
