Surprising thoughts

When I was visiting H- at the prison the other day, he mentioned that he loved to sit in the yard with his walkman on, watching everyone. In the mornings he'll listen to Performance Today and he said observing the other inmates while listening to orchestral music makes him feel that he can see everything so clearly, like maybe he can understand these people because he's viewing them from a distance.
I know what he means; I think it's a pretty common emotional response.
Then he said something that made me laugh: he said, "Oh, I stick to myself mostly. I go out to the yard and do my runs around the track, with my headphones on, you know, listening to 'Your body is a wonderland ....'" And I just cracked up laughing - something about the image of my brother jogging in a penitentiary yard to the music of John Mayer struck me as so unexpected. He didn't even know who John Mayer was, only remarked, "That song is the cut."
