Saramago

Everyone in the ward thought that it was nothing more than an act of charity that the girl with dark glasses should have offered herself to the old man with the black eyepatch, but there were men there, sensitive and dreamers, who having already enjoyed her favours, began to allow their thoughts to wander, to think there could be no greater prize in this world than for a man to find himself stretched out on his bed, all alone, thinking the impossible, only to realise that a woman is gently lifting the covers and slipping under them, slowly rubbing her body against his body, and then lying still, waiting for the heat of their blood to calm the sudden tremor of their startled skin. And all this for no good reason, just because she wanted to. These are fortunes that do not go to waste ....

~From Jose Saramago's Blindness

Saramago is one of the most amazing writers I've ever read. But it's incredibly difficult to find single passages to pull out of context and quote because all of the pieces are built upon each other. It would be like demonstrating to another the beauty and influence of one's childhood home by showing them a brick.

YOU EAT PEOPLE!!!

what's YOUR deepest secret?

You know, I can only chuckle at this. The questions seem to have nothing to do with the results, and yet I cannot say that this result is unsuitable to me. Not that I truly eat people, but if I had a deep dark secret of a non-neurotic nature ... cannibalism just might be it.

Which, for some reason, reminds me of the movie Ravenous. And I wonder if [livejournal.com profile] coronach has seen it? I should lend her and E my copy. They didn't like Final Destination, which I thought was campy in a Scream kind of way, but Ravenous is a different kind of picture altogether. If they haven't seen it already, I think they should watch it. Memories of me and my youngest brother watching that movie and giggling maniacally ....
