unitarians: Account of People Forced to Stay in New Orleans by Police. I strongly suggest reading the full article (follow the link in the excerpt from above). It is a fast read and is one of the more lucid testimonies that I've read.
Over the past week, with news of Hurricane Katrina everywhere, my mind keeps going back to a moment in The Thin Red Line. There's a part in the movie where Staros tells Sgt. Welsh (Sean Penn) that his heroic efforts will be recognized, that he'll be given a medal. But Welsh screws up his face in disgust and turns away. "Property," he says. "The whole fucking thing's about property."
